When John Cox Stevens caught his steamship home across the Atlantic and back to the New World in 1851, he had in his possession a trophy, an unremarkable (for the time) Victorian ewer from the Crown Jeweller, R&S Garrard of Panton Street, London that would define competitive sailing for the next 175 years
